1- Yohimbine is an indole alkaloid derived from the bark of the Pausinystalia yohimbe tree in Central part of Africa. It is primarily used as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. The addition of yohimbine to fluoxetine or venlafaxine has also been found to increase the antidepressant action of both of these agents. Yohimbine has been used to facilitate recall of traumatic memories in the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In pharmacology, yohimbine is used as a probe for a2-adrenoceptor. In veterinary medicine, yohimbine is used to reverse anesthesia from the drug xylazine in small and large animals.
2- Irvingia gabonensis: The episperm of the fruit has to be cracked open to get to the seed. Seeds, also called dika nuts, are eaten raw or roasted. Mostly however they are pounded to butter- or a chocolate-like block. Seeds can be pressed to produce an edible oil (solid at ambient temperatures) or margarine which are used for cooking. The oil can also be processed further to soap, cosmetics or pharmaceuticals. The press cake can be used as cattle feed or as thickening agent for soup. Seeds can be ground or crushed and used as thickening and flavoring agent in soups and stews. gabonensis resulted in greater weight-loss and improved blood-test results in obese human volunteers when compared with a placebo.
3- pygeum prunus: Pygeum is a herbal remedy containing extracts from the bark of Prunus africana. It is used to alleviate some of the discomfort caused by inflammation in patients suffering from benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate).
4- Ibogaine: Ibogaine is also used to treat depression and post traumatic stress disorder.
Research also suggests that ibogaine may be useful in treating dependence on other substances such as alcohol, methamphetamine, and nicotine.
5- Voacanga seeds: The bark and seeds of the tree are used as stimulant, aphrodisiac. These effects are due to the presence of a complex mixture of iboga alkaloids such as voacangine, voacamine, vobtusine, amataine, akuammidine, tabersonine, coronaridine and vobtusine. A number of these compounds have pharmaceutical uses. A particular pharmaceutical interest is voacangine, which is a common precursor in the semi-synthesis of the anti-addiction medication ibogaine. Voacanga Africana is used to handle Alzheimer's sickness thus enhances memory. Voacanga Africana aids in suppressing medicine addiction and used as hypotensives.
6- Gum arabic: Gum arabic is used primarily in the food industry as a stabilizer. It is edible and has E number E414. Gum arabic is a key ingredient in traditional lithography and is used in printing, paint production, glue, cosmetics and various industrial applications, including viscosity control in inks and in textile industries, For artists, it is the traditional binder
used in watercolor paint, in photography for gum printing, and it is used as a binder in pyrotechnic compositions. Pharmaceutical drugs and cosmetics also use the gum as a binder, emulsifying agent and a suspending or viscosity increasing agent. Gum arabic has been used in the past as a wine fining agent.
7- Kola nut: The kola nut is the fruit of the kola tree, a genus (Cola) of trees that are native to the tropical rainforests of Africa. The caffeine-containing fruit of the tree is used as a flavoring ingredient in beverages, and is the origin of the term "cola". Kola nuts are perhaps best known to Western culture as a flavouring ingredient and one of the sources of caffeine in cola and other similarly flavoured beverages.
8- Strophanthus: Plants from this genus produce toxic alkaloids and cardiac glycosides g- strophanthin, k-strophanthin and e-strophanthin. As ordinarily administered, the drug acts on the heart before influencing any other organ or tissue. Often indeed no other action can be observed. It is used to produce the drug Ouabain which was taken as a cardiac stimulant to treat heart failure, and is similar to the drug Digoxin produced from Digitalis purpurea.
9- Garcinia kola (bitter kola): The fruit, seeds, nuts and bark of the plant have been used for centuries in folk medicine to treat ailments from coughs to fever. The seeds are used for bronchitis, throat infections, colic, head or chest colds, and cough. It is also used for liver disorders and as a chewing stick.
